The postponed rocket launch could be seen over the NJ on Monday evening
Think you missed the Black Brant XII rocket launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia? You still have a chance Monday night.
Sunday night’s launch was postponed due to “upper winds not within the limits required for a safe launch,” according to a post on NASA Wallops Twitter account from NASA. The planned new launch is Monday around 8 p.m.
“Our chances are good to have a partial view of the rocket launch tonight. The sky will not be crystal clear, but there will be breaks in the cloud cover,” Dan Zarrow, chief meteorologist for New Jersey 101.5.
The biggest concern would be a lot of rain in the vicinity of southwestern Virginia this evening
âThe upper winds, which have swept through the last two launch attempts, are expected to be considerably lighter this time around,â Zarrow said.
Which rocket is launched?
A four-stage Black Brant XII rocket is expected to launch at 8:04 p.m., just after sunset, with a 40-minute launch window. The launch was originally scheduled for Friday, but was cleaned up on Saturday and again on Sunday due to the weather.
Where can I see the rocket?
It could be visible over much of the eastern United States.
What you will see will be the release of barium vapor 9 or 10 minutes after launch forming two green-purple clouds which can be visible for about 10 seconds in the far south of Jersey, 10 to 30 seconds in the center of Jersey and 30 to 60 seconds. north of Route 80.
Rocket emissions cause strange colors
Immediately after the steam is released, spherical clouds will form, a mixture of green and purple, and will last for about 30 seconds. After exposure to the sun, clouds of vapor rapidly ionize and take on a purple color.
Barium vapor is not harmful to the environment or to public health.
