Santa didn’t make a special trip late Saturday night to give someone a $ 400 Powerball jackpot. So that means Monday’s multi-state lottery grand prize is worth at least $ 416 million.
The cash value of Monday’s draw will be at least $ 299.5 million.
The winning numbers for Saturday were 27, 29, 45, 55 and 58, with 2 as Powerball.
This is the third time this year that the Powerball jackpot has exceeded $ 400 million. Saturday’s draw was the 35th since the jackpot was last claimed. On October 4, the winning numbers were a ticket bought in California for a jackpot of $ 699.9 million, the fifth highest in the history of the game.
On January 20, an undisclosed winner from Maryland took home $ 731.1 million.
Powerball tickets cost $ 2. Lotteries in 45 states, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands sell tickets. The Florida Lottery Broadcast Studio hosts the draws every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET.
The ticket purchase deadlines for the raffles vary depending on the lottery. Check with your local participating lottery for details.
To win, players must choose five numbers between 1 and 69 in one lot and a Powerball number from 1 to 26 in a second lot. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million.
The smaller prizes start at $ 4 to match the Powerball and go up to $ 1 million to match the first five numbers. The odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9.
Powerball sales expected to be strong on vacation
Sales figures for the Saturday drawing were not available Sunday morning. However, LottoReport.com reported that Wednesday’s draw for a $ 378 million jackpot generated $ 37.3 million in sales and $ 4 million in PowerPlay tickets.
PowerPlay is a multiplier for low price winning ticket holders. While the multiplier can go up to 10 times the low prizes, the $ 1 million prize can only be doubled.
The last time there was a Christmas draw was in 2019. This $ 183 million jackpot draw generated $ 34.6 million in sales and $ 3.2 million in PowerPlay.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Saturday sales approaching $ 50 million, even though a number of retail lottery outlets have been closed due to the holidays. Most convenience stores and some liquor and drug stores remained open for Christmas.
In addition, some people like to give lottery tickets as holiday gifts. Although this is usually a scratch ticket, a huge jackpot might have prompted some to give away Powerball tickets instead this year.
Saturdays are the strongest selling days in Powerball. Ticket sales for the past two weeks have surpassed $ 40 million as the jackpot has risen to over $ 300 million.
New double play option available in 13 lotteries
In August, the Multi-State Lottery Association, which operates Powerball, began the draws on Mondays with the goal of producing bigger and faster growing jackpots.
At the same time, Powerball has also launched a new game “Double Play”. In some states, players can spend an additional $ 1 per ticket to have their numbers eligible for a second draw on the same night.
The prices vary somewhat. Those who match the five numbers and Powerball receive $ 10 million instead of the jackpot. However, those who only get the Powerball in the second draw win $ 7 instead of $ 4 – so they’ll have that for them, which is good.
State lotteries selling Double Play are Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Washington.
