Panic at Newark Airport (UPDATE): Things get tough after traveler passes through the checkpoint
UPDATE: Panic ensued after a woman breached a security checkpoint at Newark airport, a Port Authority police spokesperson said on Monday.
“At around 10:20 am, a woman violated a security checkpoint in Terminal C and the PAPD responded,” Public Information Officer Abigail Goldring said after Monday’s incident. “The PAPD took the individual into custody, moved passengers to the street and scanned the affected areas as a precaution.
“Although there were no bomb threats or shootings, the disturbance caused significant public alarm among ticketed passengers who consequently fled the disturbance and left the terminal by various means.” said Goldring.
“No one was seriously injured,” she added.
The woman was taken to Newark University Hospital for an assessment, Goldring said.
Passengers, meanwhile, were re-screened and “operations at the 3 affected doors returned to normal,” Goldring said.
The public information branch of the airport (@ EWRairport) initially tweeted at 10:42 a.m. that a “client exited through a security door.” PAPD has responded and the incident is under control. “
Travelers insisted it was more than that.
@theofficebebe: “The worker told us there was a possible bomb threat .. TRUE under control.”
@ amannn85: “People were like an uncontrolled stampede running out of gate C109, when others saw it running and hiding under tables. People were on the tarmac and those getting off the plane at C111 were been diverted to exit by the stairs of the jet bridge “
Some said the terminal had been evacuated, while others said only partially.
@TheMattSafer: “People are screaming, running, falling down steps … some people were in the middle of the recording and are barefoot outside. 100% total chaos.”
Some said they had been told there was an active shooter. A tweeter even claimed to have heard gunshots.
@ fr0stfall: “I work here and I hide. There are police everywhere. What do you mean.”
@AlanaMJonatMD: “At gate C109, huge panic, everyone collapsed. No one came by to check anyone. Were we at the site of the breach or just on the fringe?”
Passengers on the planes noted that the security doors were closed for safety reasons.
@Matt_Curry: “We are on the runway waiting to leave. Engines turned off for a while Bc passengers who evacuated from the terminal were on the runway behind our plane.”
It was over almost as quickly as it had started.
At 11:01 am, the airport tweeted: “The previous security event has been resolved and you can return to the terminal.”
At 11:04 am, @PeekayFunny: “Now everything is fine. Waiting for boarding …. Flight delayed.”
Minutes later @ Mikey1014G: “We all assumed the worst, but it was over in 20 minutes.”
Several passengers said they saw a woman stopped by a number of uniformed officers.
@TheYechiel: “Stop posting false reports on Newark Airport. There was a security issue, there were a lot of cops, it was contained and the flights are getting on (I’m literally on my flight now). is not closed, there is no shooter. Stop creating panic. “
