False accusations: The New Jersey Democratic Party risks losing the support of Hindu Americans
Two weeks ago, in a most shocking resolution passed by the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee (TDMC) of New Jersey, and signed by Alexandra Soriano-Taveras, the chair of the committee, a false, brazen and provocative attack was launched against American Hinduism. voluntary, advocacy and service organizations. Organizations named include the American Hindu Foundation, the Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
This whole episode was a shock to the Hindu community, it was like a direct attack on its principles, value system and practices. The way TDMC framed the resolution is full of false allegations, missing facts, blatant lies and a zero understanding of the good work these organizations are doing, they have simply played a pawn in the great sea. accused community organizations of “arming” the bulldozer (against Indian minority communities) during an Indian Independence Day parade in New Jersey.
Approximately 55+ major organizations with approximately 200,000 members in New Jersey sent the letter to all Teaneck Township members, TDMC members, and many other elected New Jersey state officials. The model minority community became the target of political ideologues, religious and religious supremacists, etc.
New Jersey State Senator Vin Gopal, in a strong statement of support for the American Hindu community, condemned the resolution and called for its immediate cancellation. In his statement, he said: ‘It is unfortunate that this committee that purports to support the ideals of the Democratic Party is acting in a way that exemplifies the type of bigotry and hatred that we work hard as a country to eradicate from our society. . .”
Later, US Congressman Josh Gottheimer issued a statement: “I am deeply disappointed with Teaneck’s anti-Hindu resolve. Jersey values are about bringing people together, celebrating diversity and speaking out against extremism wherever we see it, because that’s what makes our communities strong. I pledge to fight against racism, bigotry and all forms of hatred.
After a few days, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee (NJDSC) issued a statement and condemned the anti-Hindu resolution – NJDSC Condemns Anti-Hindu Bigotry, followed by Teaneck Councilman Keith Kaplan, Mayor of Teaneck Jim Dunleavy condemned the hateful resolution and demanded termination. But President Alexandra Soriano-Taveras and TDMC members ignored the voices of her own party.
The New Jersey Democratic Party has come to a state where a small unit is beginning to ignore it and all of its members and its president are pursuing their own personal and hateful agenda that goes against the foundations and principles on which the party has been formed.
The Democratic Party says “they stand for inclusiveness and diversity, for the dismantling of all forms of hate and bigotry”, but if they can’t even control their own small units, then how in the future small communities and minorities like American Hindus will build trust in them?
It’s time for Democrats to take action, take a stand and send a strong message by disbanding the TDMC or replacing TDMC members. The truth can only endure or prevail if everyone calls it out and stands tall.
