Amex to Open Centurion Lounge in Newark (EWR)
A new Amex Centurion lounge is on the horizon.
18,000 square foot Centurion Lounge planned for Newark
The public agenda for an upcoming New York and New Jersey Port Authority board meeting suggests that American Express hopes to open one of its popular Centurion lounges at Newark Airport. For those unfamiliar with the Centurion Lounges, the Centurion Lounges are some of the awesome lounges that Amex Platinum holders have access to – for many cardholders, lounge access is a preferred perk.
American Express appears to be finalizing a 15-year lease to open a lounge in Terminal A. The lounge concept has been recommended to the board of directors, and the approval vote is expected to take place in the coming days.
It’s exciting on many levels, not only because it would be the largest Centurion lounge to date, but also because it would mean there would be a Centurion lounge at all three major airports in the New York area. Also, Newark Airport lacks interesting lounge options other than United, so it would be nice to have an alternative. If nothing else, more living room space is always a good thing in terms of fewer people in other living rooms.
Amex Centurion Lounge Newark Project Details
According to the proposal, American Express could open an 18,000 square foot lounge in the 50,000 square foot extension building at Terminal A at Newark Airport. The living room would be located on the third floor of the new building, while the first and second floor areas would be sublet to third parties.
The lease would begin around January 1, 2022 and run for approximately 15 years. Payment is expected to start around August 1, 2023 or when the show opens, so it looks like this is the closest we have to the potential show opening, if those plans are approved.
American Express would pay a total of $ 121.5 million over the term of the lease and invest approximately $ 100 million to build the terminal expansion. The airport itself would not have to make any capital investments in connection with the proposed lounge.
The show would include a variety of amenities, including:
- A panoramic terrace overlooking the airfield, Newark Harbor, New York and Newark Harbor, and the Manhattan skyline
- Several Amex restaurant and bar areas
- A piano room
- A Jersey jazz themed bar
- A backstage cocktail bar with a clandestine bar theme
- A wellness room, a workstation and “world-class sanitary facilities”
It sounds like a pretty impressive Centurion lounge to me – not only would that be huge, but it’s good sounding equipment.
Unfortunately, I’m not as excited as others when it comes to these shows. Amex Centurion lounges are sort of a victim of their own success – they’re so much better than most other airport lounges, so they often end up getting quite crowded, to the point that they’re not very relaxing.
At the end of the line
American Express hopes to open a huge Centurion lounge at Newark Airport. It is expected that the The New York and New Jersey Port Authority will approve it shortly, in which case construction could begin soon, and hopefully the show opens in the summer of 2023. I will be sure to provide an update as soon as possible. once this has been officially approved, and more details are revealed.
What do you think of the Amex Centurion Lounge Newark project?
